This volume is part of the new interest in technology brought about, in particular, by the way the digital has overrun every sphere of film production and dissemination. Far from limiting itself to recent innovations, it examines, from a perspective at once historical, theoretical, aesthetic and epistemological, various manifestations which cast into relief this complex technological mooring: from the “animated pictures” produced by Edison and Lumière to digitally retouched images by way of olfactory cinema or certain animation or film noir classics, technological transformations appear to have never stopped redefining the forms cinema can take.
